Ponferrada and its villages

Discover the history of Ponferrada and the rich heritage of its surrounding villages

Origin and evolution

Geographically located in the north-west of the province of León, Ponferrada has for centuries been a natural gateway between the plateau and neighbouring Galician lands. This strategic position, together with the emergence of the Camino de Santiago, encouraged the settlement of different peoples and cultures, fostering the town’s growth over the centuries.
Tracing its origins is not straightforward. Although there is evidence of prehistoric settlements along the banks of the River Sil, it was not until the early Middle Ages that a stable settlement developed around the Camino de Santiago.

Between rivers and pilgrims

The history of Ponferrada is closely linked to its rivers and bridges. In the 11th century, Bishop Osmundo of Astorga ordered the construction of a bridge over the River Sil to facilitate the passage of pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago.
This first bridge was reinforced with iron chains, hence the name Pons-Ferrata or “Iron Bridge”, which would later give its name to the city of Ponferrada. In the 16th century, a new stone bridge was built to cross its other main river, the Boeza — a crossing that still survives today as a pedestrian route.

Walls, growth and royal title

In the 12th century, the first walls of Ponferrada Castle were built, later housing the Knights Templar, who protected the Camino de Santiago for more than a century. Meanwhile, life in the surrounding villages continued steadily and peacefully. Many inhabitants moved down to the town in search of better opportunities, contributing to its demographic and economic growth.
On 4 September 1908, King Alfonso XIII granted Ponferrada the title of City. More than a century later, Ponferrada commemorated this milestone with the construction of a new bridge, the Centenary Bridge. Today, Ponferrada stands as both city and municipality — a place where development and history coexist.
